Arduino/C 4 Teens is a computer coding workshop for children aged 13-16, during which they will learn the basics of the ‘C’ language, by completing a number of coding challenges that run the Arduino Esplora micro-controller.
Teenagers aged 13-16 of all abilities are welcome, from beginners (who have never written a line of code) all the way through to those who may have a few years of coding experience. In addition to the course-ware and training materials, Spark4Kids will also provide lunch and healthy snacks.
Teenagers who have attended this workshop in the past can attend again if they enjoyed it the last time: we tailor the coding challenges to build upon topics covered in previous sessions (please indicate previous attendance in booking notes).
Please note – included in the fee for each attendee is an Arduino Esplora micro-controller for taking home at the end of the course.
Activities
On this workshop, the attendees will learn the basics of ‘C’ language by programming the Arduino Esplora micro-controller, covering the following topics as they progress through the workshop:
- Programming the light emitting diodes (LED’s)
- Introduction to Variables (local and global)
- Core/basic data types
- Connecting/printing via the serial port
- Detecting audio via the microphone
- Learning Conditionals (Selection, If/Else)
- Logical Operators (AND/OR)
- Loops and Iteration
- Arrays and loops/iteration
- Basic GCSE coding (looping, selection, iteration)
- Exploring the Esplora code library
- …And much more
At the end of the workshop, attendees will be able to show off their code to friends and family. All attendees will also be provided with an online account and personal coding environment, where they will be able to continue computer coding in their own time.
Note: attendees on this course will be able to take home their own Arduino Esplora (included in the fee).
Workshop Hours
The standard workshop hours are 10am to 4pm and attendees are expected to arrive just before 10am, and leave after 4pm.
Food and Snack Breaks
All attendees on the workshops will be offered lunch. Of course, they may also bring in a packed lunch if they have special dietary requirements or have their own preferences. Healthy snacks and refreshments will be available throughout the day.
Each workshop day will be punctuated with breaks to ensure that the children take time away from computers/computer coding. Short walks and trips outdoors will be taken, however this will be dependent on the weather.
Sibling Discounts
We offer sibling discounts for parents who are registering more than one attendee on our workshops. The first sibling pays the full amount for the workshop, and any additional siblings attract a 10% discount off the original fee.
