The Scratch 4 Kids course is designed for children aged 8-11 who are ready to take their first steps in coding.
Scratch is a programming language invented at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology which teaches children programming through the use of digital building blocks. These commands are used to add behaviour to ‘sprites’, 2D characters and objects which can either be drawn or imported into Scratch. Through commands children can alter the “Motion”, “Sound” and “Sensing” abilities of their characters, ultimately creating their own video games and animations.
Attendees of all abilities are welcome, from beginners (who have never written a line of code) all the way through to experienced coders. Those who have attended this workshop in the past can attend again if they enjoyed it the last time; we tailor the coding challenges to build upon topics covered in previous workshops (please indicate previous attendance/experience in booking notes).
This is an all-inclusive workshop, with Spark4Kids providing all the course material and tuition.
In this practical, coding workshop, attendees will receive a gentle introduction to Scratch covering the fundamental features of Scratch, including:
- The Scratch coding environment
- Coding animations
- Music with Scratch
- Drawing with Scratch
- Creating Sprites (characters) in Scratch
- Using strings, variables and if statements.
- Running mathematical operations and writing algorithms.
- Handling user input.
All attendees will be able to continue computer coding in their own time, and at their own pace, after the workshop has ended.
The workshop is designed to keep the kids engaged during the sessions, and while the focus is on creating a fun and supportive environment in which children learn about various aspects of technology and coding, there will be sufficient breaks to ensure that the children spend some time away from the computer.
